EMERALD GREEN ARBORVITAE - The living Fence |
|
HOODVIEW NURSERY GENERAL COMMENTS Arborvitae grows relatively easy in most zones. Once the root system is established, it requires minimal maintenance and gives years of growing pleasure. Arborvitae has a narrow, compact, pyramidal form and bright green foliage. They can grow 10-15 feet tall, 3-4 feet wide and at a rate of 1-2 feet per year initially. PLANTING If your plants are being shipped, they will be bare-rooted and packed in moist peat. It is important not to let the roots dry out and to plant immediately to avoid further stressing the plants. Avoid extremes of heat or cold. If field-planting, it is best to plant on a cool, cloudy day. If you are purchasing F.O.B. they will be in growers flats. Keep the flats in a shaded, protected area and well-watered until you plant. WATERING For the first year in particular you will want to make sure your new plantings have a regular as well as an adequate supply of water . Their roots will be close to the surface and subject to drying out. As they become established, it is best to water deeply and less frequently; this will force the roots to go down more deeply for water. Once well-established, they generally require only normal care in watering. FERTILIZER Use a product specifically formulated for Arborvitae or consult your local garden center for recommended products available in your area. Follow the directions carefully. We prefer a slow-release but no matter which type you choose remember young plants can easily be damaged by being over fertilized. Once well-established, they are known to be hardy to at least -40 degrees and are heat tolerant. SUN/SHADE TOLERANCE While they prefer full to partial sun, they will also grow in shade. |
