Project Goal is to determine if an Airpot inside of another container with a sawdust buffer will increase root and stem growth and if the roots can be better manipulated for more symmetrical root growth.

The trees were stored in sawdust until July 2 when they were placed in an Airpot 12” height and 28” diameter which was filled with soil.  A corrugated plastic sheet, white on the outside, was wrapped around the container with approximately 3” of gap which was filled with sawdust on a pallet covered with nursery fabric.  A drip ring is being used to water them.

Various sizes of trees in Airpots placed into rigid containers with the space filled with sawdust.  The Columnar Oak in a 3 gallon Airpot is twice the height and larger in caliper than those from the same batch planted only in Airpots.  This deserves more research.  The roots will be examined in October.  8/22/05
